Box joint cutter set and tear out - USS-DDG2 - 10-08-2020
I've been using the Freud box joint cutter set and get lots of tear-out despite using a backing board. I'm wondering if a regular dado stack would eliminate the problem. Anyone else using this thing? Any tear-out problems?

The outside blades on a standard dado set have teeth that are "Alternate Top Bevel" (ATB). That leaves the little points, or rabbit ears, in the two outside corners of the dado.

That's one of the reasons I use the router table and fixture, That, and it's easier than fiddling with dado blades.
NB - use a spiral bit.

What kind of wood? Plywood is going to tear out no matter what you do.
What kind of backerboard? Don't use MDF or plywood.

I use a fresh backer board each time I set up my box joint blades. I use baltic birch plywood, no problems here.+

I have not noticed any tearout when cutting box joints in solid wood with the Freud box joint set. I don't see the point of box joints cut in plywood.

Use a new backer board for each project. No tear out as long as the work pieces are held tightly to the backer board.
I like using box joints with Baltic birch plywood because it's an incredibly strong joint that easy to make, and it looks great to me.
