I agree that it looks better with the upside down triangles.  I think it depends on the look you want.

That is a nice assortment of free wood.   I miss having a cabinet shop nearby. I used to root through their off cut throwaways for a lot of nice ply.

The blade on my #80 has been worn down to the nub. I was thinking of trying a cabinet scraper in there just to see how it works. I'd like to see how your thicker blade works as well.

Never seen a brass hand plane before. Although I am not familiar with the AMT brand. I have seen the bronze from Lee Valley and the like.

I like to use a soft wire wheel on my angle grinder for that sort of thing. You just have to watch out for flying wires when you do it.
