More:
1) What is the length of the belt? 2) Do you have dimensions for the spring?
Thanks!

The cut out is so you can sharpen a knife. Probably not needed if you're only sharpening hand tools.
The belt is a 1"x30". This will work for a 1"x42", the superstructure only needs to be slid back further from the drive pulley.
The spring is 2-7/8" long, 3/4" diameter, .105 diameter wire.
I had a 2-7/8" x 5/8" with .072 wire.... It was a bit soft. Of course, my idler wheel is heavy.
Anyway, I can play with some different sizes...but the length will stay the same.

Okay, cool. I'll work the spring. Anyway, here is a start: If you click on the photo, a 3D pdf will open in Adobe Acrobat. It won't open properly in the Chrome pdf viewer. If you are using Chrome, right click, save as and then open the file in Acrobat. Unless anyone objects, I'm gonna provide fasteners and such as McMaster-Carr part numbers. I'll get the drawings laid out tomorrow. Cheers,
chris

This looks like a better idler: $13 from Amazon It will require a 17mm bolt. Is that a show stopper?

My spring is about the same length, but only 1/2" dia and wire is about .060"..Not as strong, but strong enough because the bell crank has more leverage..The crank lever is longer below the pivot bolt. Bell crank only has about 1/2" of travel..but it's just enough to tension the belt yet make it take less effort to replace.

I may have too much tension... Bit it pretty close to my delta 1x30. Here is why you need the cut out.

The belts will tell you if the tension is too great..If they break...it's too much..

Okay, I'm leaning toward this spring: Only about $1 a piece Thoughts?

I swapped out spring tonight, the lighter spring doesn't work on my setup. If you moved up the lever mounting hole you could gain some leverage. However, there isn't much room. Jacks superstructure is taller so he could get a longer lever. I couldn't find what he used which is why I ended up with 2"x2" angle iron

Hi Chris, I was finally able to open the 3d file... that is cool. Am I missing something or can you only see and rotate the image at this point?
