If you have ever seen or admired 18th century marquetry, you might have seen the work of Jean François Oeben. Oeben was cabinetmaker to King Louis XV, and his work is excellent.
The Getty Museum performed some testing on one table constructed by Oeben, and the results are amazing. The marquetry started its life in brilliant color, but because of the chemicals used, it has a more muted form today.
