I've been having a tough time rehabbing two lovely old coffin smoothers I have. I've asked about them before in this forum. But here's one problem I discovered on one of them that I didn't expect. I was having trouble with shavings getting jammed in the mouth. I finally realized that the two arms of the wedge were projecting so far down that shavings were getting caught on them and gumming up the works. I don't know why this was happening--if it was because of long use or something I did. In any case I pared the ends of the wedge off just a little. The plane works much, much better now. The thick blade, when sharp, cuts beautifully. It's a real pleasure to use.
It's always nice when someone posts a solution, or something they learned.  Thanks.
