A little project I've been doing this week:

I started with some sassafras wood and laid out the joined corners:

I was a bit stuck on what to do for the top-cover.  Then I saw my latest butternut blank purchase was just the right x-y dimensions.  Then I thought about the old saw-tote sitting there in my shop, and decided to try to chip-carve something similar:

I finally took the plunge and started chip-carving the butternut.  Really my first try at a pattern aside from random shapes.   I used to have a Flexcut knife but only lately figured out it was frustrating me because of its "mini" blade size.  I then got a regular-blade Hock chip carving knife, and plunged in.   And here we go, a tribute to a saw-tote (only us folks need to know!).

Happy woodworking (and happy tool hoarding if not woodworking!)

Chris
Now that's pretty cool.  Good job, thanks for sharing.

Now I'm gonna head back in the shop and continue my tool hoarding.
Cool Cool Cool Thinking Outside the box. Smile
Cool Cool Cool Cool
Nice touch!  I love carving butternut but it's getting hard to find.
Nicely done! And you've inspired me with your dovetails. I want to build a shoe-shine box for my dad, but I was debating what style of joinery to use. Those are simple, and elegant.
