This is a walnut trunk from my neighbors tree.
It was the fudge   where two trunks of about 12" and 14" took off.
Cut down 4 yrs ago.  I gently rolled it down the hill from her yard
to mine.  I'm guessing weight about #600.  I moved it a bit last week and
would guess it is about #400 now.  I am going to cut this up.  No mill..
just my chain saw.  I'm thinking to cut it length wise, diagonally across the
grain in about 4" slabs.  I really like cutting on the diagonal as opposed to
perpedicular or parallel.   Hoping this is going to produce some amazing wood for boxes.  
Thoughts/comments/suggestions.

SWAG:

Take a maul and split it where nature is guiding it before you cut into it.

Just wondering why you want to cut it diagonally? Doesn't that in effect produce a slab with end grain fibers exposed or is that what you want?

I'm looking for this kind of cut only length wise.
Different way to expose the grain.




...but, now that you mention it, I should cut it diagonally across the grain.

I highly recommend against diagonal cutting.  You'll have the pith in every slab, and that's not going to age well.  I agree with splitting it where it's already starting to split and inspect before you begin any other cutting.
