I would never presume to do that, as we all have our ways of skinning a cat....  But I haven't seen Steve use one of these:

which we all intuitively know are absolutely essential for making a serviceable mallet!   Smile
1/2 of the Guinness is now gone....

Since Paul Sellers seems to like that style of hammer, thought i would at least try one.

As for a wooden mallet...

BTDT several years ago....
I've turned a few myself; I was thinking of a jointers mallet! :-)
Had to retire that wooden mallet... No

Was getting a bit too flaky...balance was off...

The rawhide one was...ok...tended to bounce back too much....
I have actually used a hammer similar to Bandit's for decades-hard plastic face and soft rubber face. Craftsman brand and now available at Lowes. Worked very well. Lesser used is a "Wood is Good" brand round mallet.
