A friend of mine sent me these pix.  He recently took down a 100+ yr old barn in Upstate NY and most of the wood looks like this. He cut off these small chunks and cleaned them up a bit. The chunks on the left of each pic are dry and the right are wet with water.

We're thinking it's Chestnut. Anybody know for sure?
Chestnut was my first thought before I even saw your guess.
Hmmm?
You see chestnut, I see something like pine.
Not white pine, the longleaf which used to grow up north.

What’s it smell like when milled?
Looks more like poplar than chestnut to me. The lighter bands on chestnut tend to be wider than the dark bands on face grain. If he has longer board shots, that would help. Chestnut tends to have a lot of worm holes.
Upstate NY , 100 yrs ago I’m saying Pine. Not like my Eastern Ohio salvaged Chestnut at all.
Kind of looks like chestnut to me. I got a batch of old chestnut barn wood from the north east several years ago. Looks similar.
