Mike Peace had a video about bleaching wood that suggested using a lye solution and hydrogen peroxide half and half. He also had a link to a PDF documenting the process. I tried it and it worked.

The boss is now happy. By the way, the color is more even between the base and body than the pic shows. The base looks a lot lighter in real life.

Problem solved! Beautiful piece and well worth the effort!
