She first told me it was cherry, and sanding cherry can change the patina. If it's walnut I'm not as concerned about patina.
It's in pretty rough condition...not much there to lose.

Aged walnut gets lighter.  If you sand it, it will get darker.  It's like cherry in reverse.

I would call it walnut, with sapwood
