Besides from just working, what else might possibly happen? Overheat or something?

Yes ,or trip the breaker if it is a direct short to ground. If it is just a lot of leakage probably nothing would happen for quit a while. If the neutral is somehow making a connection to the ground internally a breaker will not trip but a gfci would. Keep in mine the metal outer parts, if any could become energized if the plug would not be grounded. If you have an ohmmeter check from the plug (unplugged) from both flat legs on the plug to the ground leg with the switch turned on. It should show open or max resistance. Roly
