I have some experience filling voids and holes on wood turning blanks. You can tint epoxy with acrylic paint, but this will mean a longer cure time. I don't know what color your alder is or what effect you are looking for but you can also mix ground coffee or sawdust into epoxy. It has to be sanded smooth but it is surprisingly effective.
