An update - the lacquer thinner worked. I was able to get it all off and re-tread with a salad bowl finish. Just like that I have a Christmas gift for someone.
I went and got another can of lacquer thinner because I couldn't find the one I thought I had. I finished cleaning the old finish off the bowl, went to put the lacquer thinner away and knocked something off my bench. When I went to pick it up, guess what I found under the bench?
