Thanks for all the replies and suggestions! The material is 3/4" thick and has been planned smooth. I will wipe with some paint thinner and see what it looks like. 

I have considerable quilted maple (also $2.00 bd/ft at estate sale ) and may combine that with the cherry. I made a nightstand with quilted maple drawers left natural color and the carcass/legs are cherry.

QSC is great for door frames. Less likely to warp.
