If your shop is in the basement and hardly every gets above 80 degrees then the smaller unit will do fine. I have a stand alone garage shop. Around 450 sq ft with insulation in the walls. It's mostly in the sun all day. If it's 90+ degrees outside, my small 5,000 BTU window unit can keep it comfortable enough for me so you should be good.
