I used 6d galvanized (coated?- hot dipped?) nails about 15 years ago- siding hasn't fallen off yet. But there's always tomorrow. I remember I had to be confident, true, and deliberate on the first forceful hit of the nail. I like to grind the end of the hammer flat.

we used coiled nailers for Habitat builds. Just a run of the mill Bostitch. Don't think it takes anything special.
