I've seen clamps -- I think I got some "Kobalt" from Lowes that used the same "grabbers" for both sliding and crank ends so no threads needed.

+1. I'd rather have four five-foot clamps that can be easily converted to two 10-footers in the rare instance that I need uber-long clamps. That was the situation once in my shop.

Got a friend with a pipe die, it's pretty easy to thread them.
