If this is a true firebox, and you opt for replacement, make sure that both "brick" and mortar are refractory grade...

Here are some photos.  The first shows a front view of the left side of the firebox.  The rest are looking up to where the smoke screen should attach.  You can see where the nail was holding up this end of the screen and a piece of the brick broke off.  That black gunk is the high-heat sealant I tried to use.  
I'll look into high-heat epoxy. I'd rather not start knocking out bricks if I don't have to.
