Wood is a good choice for contour work also. I suppose anything would work, really..I have slip-stones in translucent and black Arkansas, as well as Indias in every shape on the market..most from tools shows and flea markets collected over many years. But to take the grief out of "V" tool sharpening, nothing I have ever found equals the little leather wheels spinning @3400rpm on the tapered arbor...Too bad more people dont give this a go...I'm betting they would be amazed and pleased with the results. And it's not limited to just carving tools either...Lathe gouges and straight chisels are unbelievably sharp as well... I use the flexcut strop (second link) for stropping my carving tools. It's plenty good to maintain an edge on my carving tools. Since I now have some diamond emulsions I use on leather strops to sharpen my knives, I may purchase another uncharged flexcut slipstrop and charge it with 5 micron or finer diamond paste. Should last longer and maintain a finer edge. RE: Felt Wheel Sources - BC in CT - 03-23-2022 Lots of good suggestions here, thank you. I think I'll explore more of a DIY course of action. Maybe some hollows and rounds carved out of poplar scraps may work. |
