I cut 1/4 inch grooves the face frames 1/4 inch deep. Then pre finish the inside of the face frames. Cut a 1/4 X 1/4 rabbet on the on the plywood and insert the panel into the groove and glue it in. Do not finish the inside of the face frame that will be in contact with the plywood. Glue doesn't stick to a finished surface so any glue squeeze out is easy to clean up. I tend not to finish the outside until the cabinet is assembled. that way id I have clamp marks or what ever I can fix them before finishing.
