Here is the end result:  I made these using patterns in Woodsmith vol. 45 No. 270.  The cherry pines are for my daughters.  I pushed to get them done so I could sent it back to college at Thanksgiving.  I showed it to her and in typical kids answer said "I don't have room for it in my dorm".  Going to get a block of wood next year!  I had this stupid idea of using "luminescent clear coat" over the top coat.  It's not totally transparent, and I had to removed the finish.  The cherry had a lot of variations in color, and the birch was from a dead tree in our yard.    Thanks for the ideas!

Those are really nice.  And despite the protestation, I'm sure your daughter will find a spot for them and think of how special it is to have a father who takes the time to make something for her.
