RE: Helical head for planer which one? - fredhargis - 08-31-2024 Don't you love when things just kinda fall into place? Although I can't speak from personal experience....it never happens to me. Congrats! Time to buy a lottery ticket! ![]() Doug RE: Helical head for planer which one? - JDuke - 09-01-2024 Funny even if I won the lottery I’d still buy used tools just for the hunt… RE: Helical head for planer which one? - kurt18947 - 09-01-2024 John touched on this but the helical heads do require more power apparently. The straight knife JJP-12 planes at 20 FPM. The Jet helical head planes at 12 FPM. I did inquire at Byrd about that. They claimed that people were installing Byrd heads and weren't reducing the speed. I did see one guy that got the parts list for the straight head and helical head machines. He compared the lists and ordered what feed drive parts were different so he was able to reduce the feed speed. There's no practical way that I see to upsize the motor on the JJP-12. I figured if I ever do a head change I'll mount an ammeter some place convenient and vary the depth of cut so as to not exceed the motor rating, 15 amps I believe. |
