I was perplexed by that too initially. The compound mortise/tenon joint for the legs makes for a very sturdy structure and I think Mr. Becksvoort determined that the stretchers were not necessary. I'll let you know if/when this bench collapses. RE: Christian Becksvoort's Shaker Settee - Pedder - 10-05-2024 Hi Phil, This came out beautiful, I really should visit this section more often. Looks like there were no hick ups in the building and the bench looks comfortable. the only thing I wonder about is the postion of the outer legs. My eye would like them to be closer to the ends. Cheers Pedder RE: Christian Becksvoort's Shaker Settee - Philip1231 - 10-09-2024 (10-05-2024, 03:16 AM)Pedder Wrote: Hi Phil, Pedder: Thanks for the kind words. There were no major problems during the build I am happy to report. The bench is comfortable enough although it's really more of an accent piece in our house, although who knows how future generations will use it. As far as the leg position: I was happy with the way Mr. Becksvoort had laid them out, although I did modify the shape of the seat slightly (from his original plans) to make it slightly more rectilinear. I am generally in agreement with Christian's shaker aesthetic. When I build another one of these (not any time soon) I will have to experiment with the leg position. Phil RE: Christian Becksvoort's Shaker Settee - BrokenOlMarine - 10-19-2024 Thanks for the build along. Enjoyed the trip. Beautiful result. Love the soft glow for the finish. RE: Christian Becksvoort's Shaker Settee - Martin S. - 10-20-2024 Really nice job! Well done! Thanks for posting the pics and explanations. |
