That sets the back of the tail. I add a little wiggle room to both sides of the width of the chisel. Then I decide how small I want the small part of the pin to be. I don’t think I ever make it less than 1/8”. I’ve never much thought about the angle. I will say if you make the angle too high, it’s harder to chop out the tails. For Derek, on pieces that have the little pins, drawer fronts are often the only dts that exhibit that design. I honestly don’t know why they did it. But I’ve seen museum pieces with figured drawer fronts that twisted. I think 18th c craftsmen were well aware of the danger of exposed end grain. Many repaired furniture. 17th c and earlier furniture often made drawers with rabbeted and nailed sides. I’ve done it myself and it makes a good drawer. My guess is, dovetailed drawers held up better and required no hardware.
