Lumber in W.MA - CloseShave - 10-20-2014

Hi,

I bought a house close to Pittsfield, MA and I've been trying to find a hardwood dealer relatively close by. Woodfinder isn't much help, most of what it lists is pretty far away, like at least 1.5HRS drive time.

I'm hoping to find a small lumber dealer, one that might not be listed on Woodfinder.

Can anyone recommend a place I could check out?

Thanks, Steve

There is one in Greenfield, Forest Products Associates, and there are several more there. I have found a guy on Craig's list in your neck of the woods whose prices seemed OK.

Ken,

Thanks for the Forest Products pointer, I'll check them out. I never thought to look at CL postings, good idea!!

I know there must be some good small places out in W.MA, I'd rather support local sawyer's than a giant company.

Eagle lumber in Stamford VT is just across the border from Clarksburg MA 802-694-1411. I picked up some figured oak from them quite a long time ago.

If You are willing to drive almost an hour there are a couple in NY that are only about 15 minutes from each other.

Valenti lumber at 8957 Rte 66 Averill Park NY 518-674-3750
Hankle lumber 7344 Rte 66 East Nassau NY 518-766-5726

Once a year the Northeast Woodworkers Assoc. has an auction of wood in Latham NY The auction takes place in Sept. of each year, and you do not need to be a member to bid. You can follow their newsletters to see the date.

Not knowing where you are moving from you may want be interested in the woodworking shows that are fairly close to you.

The NWA has a really good woodworking show in March http://nwawoodworkingshow.org/

In January there is a woodworking show in W.Springfield. http://www.thewoodworkingshows.com/

I envy you living in Pittsfield.

I visited the Shaker Museum there a couple times, and really enjoyed it.

The area seem really nice and the scenery was beautiful.

I'm over in Albany and I use Valente. Their prices are reasonable and they will let you sort/search for boards you like. As Karl said, you should consider coming over here next September for the NWA auction. Prices are real good. We sell a lot of oak, cherry and maple. Sometimes we have butternut, walnut and some exotics, but the exotics are pretty small quantities.

Have you been to Berkshire Products in Sheffield?
Always an interesting place to while away a few hours.

Dave,

Thanks, I'll definitely attend the next NWA auction. It sounds like fun and I'll check out Valente too.

I need to learn the area so I'm more than happy to visit these places.

Thanks again, Steve

No, I haven't been there, but it was one of the places that came up on the WoodFinder search. I checked their web site, its quite impressive. I really like these kinds of places.

Do they sell only veneers and slabs or do they also have dimensioned rough lumber?
