Wanna see some purdy wood? - MarvW - 11-20-2014

This handle was made from the crotch of a Live Oak tree that fell behind our house about 4 years ago...

Here's the other side..

Yowza!

Now, that is cool! Painting it John Deere?

After a lot of peering, etc., is that a wood spine, too?

That's really nice!

What live oak I see is often kind of gray, and while I find the figure attractive, the color is off-putting. Glad to see live oak with some good color here.

No John Deere on this one. But thanks for asking....

The blade is from a Home Depot cheapo backsaw. It has 1/8" thick back on it. Yes, that is wood on the back, but the wood isn't replacing the back. It just covers it up. Didja notice there are no screws?

Here's what the HD saw looked like.. A little on the fugly side, don'tcha think?

Steve,

This Oak is very light in color in it's natural color. When I applied paste wax to it, it darkened it. Paste wax is all I put on it. The wood is very tough, not so hard, but tough. It was very difficult to wheat carve.

I found the wheat carving to be as striking as the wood. Nicely done, Marv.

Gorgeous, simply gorgeous!

Did you use your usual carving tool? Is the steel sufficiently good to make a quality saw once it is refiled?

That upper horn looks a little like the head of a duck.

Glad you said what wood it is made from. From the picture I would have no idea.

So, Why the flat top? It it about to join the military?

Yup. But, you know the rule.... never ask more than one question. I was pushing it at 2. Is the handle glued on?
