Is this a good deal? - Birdseye Bill - 09-03-2015 I have the chance to buy a used hollowing rig that is similar to the one sold by Lyle Jamieson. He is asking $175. It does not have a laser but it is very solid and hefty. I am just a hobbiest and will use it on my Jet 1642 lathe. Re: Is this a good deal? - AHill - 09-03-2015 Lyle's basic package is $395, so if the quality of what you're looking at is equivalent to the Jamieson, you are probably on the high side. I think the laser is probably 1/3 of the price of the Jamieson system. I'd offer $125 and see how the seller responds. Re: Is this a good deal? - Birdseye Bill - 09-03-2015 Thanks Allan. How important is the laser? It looks pretty handy but is it necessary? Re: Is this a good deal? - Wipedout - 09-03-2015 Birdseye Bill said: Well it definitely makes it easier to judge wall thickness. Obviously you can do it without it but with it uniform wall thickness is a breeze and you are much less likely to come thru the side or bottom Re: Is this a good deal? - Wildwood - 09-04-2015 Big thing to look for is compatibility with common boring bars on the market and thread size of hex nuts or handles that come with that rig. I bought the D-handle & back rest from Packard Woodworks and use Jordon, Sorby and other bars with my set up on a Jet 1642. I had to swap out the hex nut on the D-handle with a star knob with same threads. Made my own laser set up for my Jamieson rig for about $35 using wood dowels and hardware. You can find aftermarket laser set up for less than Lyle’s or make your own. Depending upon design might not need a laser on every hollow form. Since cannot see the rig you are looking at, compatibility issue, and know what you might want to turn agree $125 a fair price. Re: Is this a good deal? - Wipedout - 09-04-2015 If you end up buying it I have Jamiesons original DVD on using it - Hollow Forms Made Easy. I plan to get around to putting it up in the swap and sell section soon. Let me know if your interested in it. I'll make a a good deal on it. It's a good DVD on setting it up and using it Re: Is this a good deal? - Arlin Eastman - 09-04-2015 This is Lyle Jamieson's site http://lylejamieson.com/ This is his tool store http://lylejamieson.com/#tool-store This is his laser system http://lylejamieson.com/product/laser-measuring-system/ The laser itself only cost about $10 to buy anywhere but I would highly suggest if you do buy the guys system that you watch Lyles DVD http://lylejamieson.com/product/in-depth-hollowing-techniques-dvd/ to learn how to use it. Arlin Re: Is this a good deal? - clovishound - 09-04-2015 I made one similar to this. I would not want to use it without the laser. A laser can be added fairly easily. Re: Is this a good deal? - iclark - 09-04-2015 I saw Trent Bosch demonstrate his visualizer when I visited the Front Range Turners last year. I bought the laser attachment when I got my hollowing system, but I am working on upgrading it to Trent's camera-base system. Here is a video intro to it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=bCg7jXCesEA |
