Looks to be a blister, rather than a burl. Probably healing over that injury that still left a gap on the far rim. No rot, though.
I love the interrupted edge stuff, and you did it well.

Thanks everyone! MM, you could be right. I dug this chunk of wood out of a bargain bin years ago. I was excited when I found it the other day!

I'd be scared to turn something like that with the little experience I have. I'd be afraid it'd blow up in my face.
It is a nice piece of art though.
