My mother in law asked me to refinish this desk. Any idea what went around the inkwell? I see 4 screw holes.

I would like to put what was original back but I don't know where to look and cant find any images on Google.

My guess would be a brass holder in the same size and shape.
You are very unlikely to find one, but you could fashion one. Mill a block of maple or ther hard wood to the same size and shape as the pocket on the desk. Buy some lightweight sheet brass and hammer it into the shape using the maple piece as a form.
That is how I would approach it.

The only other thing I see is a pencil sharpener, but I think a cover for the well is more likely. Keep those pigtails out.
