Drill press stand ideas? - WaterlooMarc - 12-16-2015
Anybody have pics of clever stands for a bench top drill press? my google skills are failing me as it seems most sites just show the same 3 things. Of course that could mean there's only so many ways to skin a cat.
I'd like to have a place to keep all of my bits and accessories. I'm halfway thinking of just goin to the store and buying a base cabinet of drawers and calling it a day. But that would hurt my woodworking pride.

Just modify by adding a couple of drawers for storage underneath, one on the left and the other on the right. Encase the drawers.

Former tablesaw and RAS stands are relatively sturdy and inexpensive...Craigslist can be a good place to start...Not very creative, but quick and easy...

But Amazon.com has dozens for about $50.00. It may not pay to make it yourself. Though I would want casters on mine if I bought one.

We have a "Builder's Supply House" locally that sells cheap base & upper cabinets ... these are plywood & solid wood cases with veneered mdf doors/drawer fronts. I picked up a 4-drawer 18" base cabinet for about $40, installed a hard top and casters ... it works perfect ... and has a lot of storage ..
I also have one for my Hollow chisel Mortiser and another for a sharpening station ...

I did it the easy way. For $35 I bought a used wooden 2-drawer lateral file and bolted my drill press to its top. Work height is just about right. The wood lateral files are heavy enough to be very stable (don't even think about the metal ones). My router table is done the same way. Bonus is having two huge drawers underneath each unit for storage of tools, bits, drawings, plans, and just about anything you can think of. I put HTC-2000 or 3000 mobile bases under them when I found them on sale. Check places for used offfice furniture.

I built one from steel. It is in the background of this pic. Metalworking compliments woodworking. I splayed the legs out 5 degrees in all directions. Being made from steel gives me more confidence when I bolt it to the floor too. There is an expanded metal shelf beneath that will get chips on it but it is good for storing the vise. I actually keep my bits in another location with my cordless drills because I use those more often.
I built all three of the stands in that picture.

Also, most people go to great lengths to have casters and mobile equipment, yet you bolted everything in place. Do you ever wish you could simply slide something to the right 10" to give you a little extra working room?
