#2 Morse taper cleaner? - Wild Turkey - 01-31-2016 Dropped by Woodcraft in Louisville today and saw one in #3 taper, but I need a #2 for the Vega I'm putting back online. Anyone know of a source? (I'm at a SLOW computer with limited search abilities [LOML in hospital for chemo related problems] and am trying to pass the time til I can get home.) Re: #2 Morse taper cleaner? - Shop Dad - 01-31-2016 Like this? https://www.woodturnerscatalog.com/p/90/3651/TaperMate-Morse-Taper-Cleaner Doug Re: #2 Morse taper cleaner? - Arlin Eastman - 01-31-2016 You know I have never needed one nor all the other turners I have known. I would thing the only time it might be needed is rehabbing an old one that had a ton of gunk in it. I usually put a cloth rag thru it by using a 1/4" rod and to see if anything does get in there but only once it had some dust buildup. If you do need one Craftsupply has them, Arlin oops I see Doug already gave you the link. Re: #2 Morse taper cleaner? - Shop Dad - 01-31-2016 To Arlin's point, something like this would be more helpful for rehabbing: http://www.amazon.com/Brass-Brush-Power-...T7ZXXTZM8D0GS5B The one at Craft Supplies is to remove loose chips and dust. Re: #2 Morse taper cleaner? - Wild Turkey - 02-01-2016 That looks like what I'm looking for. The chuck was moderately rusted in place and I'll go after the worst of it with wire brush and sandpaper but I want the cleaner for the final polishing. That is after I get the three seasons of bug nests out of the shaft Re: #2 Morse taper cleaner? - Leo Van Der Loo - 02-01-2016 ebay has this, http://www.ebay.com/itm/MT2-No-2-Morse-T...~oAAOSwJb9WrKhT You could also glue strips of fine sandpaper on a morse taper 2 that you have, leave a bit of room between the strips for the rust, rotate carefully in the female MT, blowing the rust out periodically, and working it till clean. HTH Re: #2 Morse taper cleaner? - skizzo - 02-01-2016 A morse taper reamer may be useful. http://www.amazon.com/Speed-Morse-Taper-...in%3A2638841011 If you want a brass brush, visit your local gnu supply store's cleaning section. Re: #2 Morse taper cleaner? - DFJarvie - 02-01-2016 Go to the hardware store and buy the brush they use to clean copper pipes before the solder them. Cut the handle off and they can be chucked in a drill. Re: #2 Morse taper cleaner? - castguy2003 - 02-01-2016 Google Travers Tool or Manhattan Supply. The tool is available commercially and it's plastic blades will not harm your taper as other methods might. Re: #2 Morse taper cleaner? - AHill - 02-01-2016 I would avoid using wire brush that isn't brass. Stainless steel or steel wire will likely leaves scratches in your taper, which will accumulate more debris and compromise the seal you get when it's used. I would also avoid using any power tool to rotate a brush. Unless you're very careful, the stem might also scratch the taper. Just my opinion. YMMV. |
