War and Peace - n7bsn - 02-21-2016 I was just watching the recent BBC production of War and Peace. At about the 7:10 hr mark Prince Bolkonsky (the elder, the grumpy old man) is seen mounting a piece of wood on his treadle lathe, that is sitting in the parlor. Spot oh authentic for the period. Nobles in German, Scandinavian and Russian areas took up turning as a avocation. Of course -they- didn't have to clean up the wood chips. Re: War and Peace - Arlin Eastman - 02-21-2016 The things you see when you are a wood turner. I see wood piles everywhere I, but can not bring home and wish I could. Arlin Re: War and Peace - MichaelMouse - 02-22-2016 Peter the Great was supposedly a pretty good turner. Re: War and Peace - Rodneywt1180b - 02-23-2016 Wouldn't that make him Peter the Pretty Good? The tools some of those nobles used were works of art in their own right. Ivory handled dovetail saw anyone? Rodney |
