Not smart - Zalsa - 04-03-2016

For some reason, I got it into my head that making a cabinet with a frame and panel design would be somehow easier than with single boards. Turns out, at least for me, that was not the case, especially since I had never done frame and panel before, and I decided to have lots of curved parts in it. 6 months worth of weekends later, I came close enough to finishing it today, and decided I should post some pics even if they are not the best and the clamps are still in place. (I will post better pics in a couple of weeks).

Made of air dried Cherry - book matched panels and top - all the wood from a single tree (local to upstate NY). Finished with shellac and Waterlox.

that is GORGEOUS - I love the shape and the choice of grain/wood..the handles.. the taper on the feet... you knocked it out of the park

Please do post pics once it is in place- (and again in 10 years when it turns that deep cherry color... it'll be even nicer then)

It looks good. Sometimes you have to stretch yourself to see what you can do.

That is beautiful. Please post pics when the clamps are off.

I'd say those weekends were well spent. Very nice.

How far upstate? I'm in Lewiston.

Six months well spent, really turned out nice.

Looks good to me. I like the knots on the door and top. I like to leave more of that in that most as it makes the piece look like real wood not like the sticker wood with no character.

My project today is to get half the doors and fronts for the kitchen clear coated. Wasn't able to get all the cherry the same color but that's fine with me. Finish will be a bit glossy but very durable which is good in a kitchen. Ended up doing blo then automotive urethane clear.

I think you did a great job. Nice design, choice of wood, and especially execution. Weekends well spent in my opinion!

Please post some more pic's when you have it complete.

Re: Not smart - Zalsa - 04-05-2016

Folks: Thank you for the nice comments. A friend of mine commented that the piece looks a lot darker than my previous pieces in Cherry - and so I had to explain to him that I had milled this wood a long time prior to completing the piece - much more so than the other pieces - so it had more time to darken! Not a good sign for how long it took me.

John: The wood is from Dutchess County, where I have a weekend place. I actually live in NYC.
