water based varnish over oil based stain? - vernonls - 06-07-2016 Can I put a water based varnish over an oil based stain if I am careful to leave plenty of time for the oil based stain to dry? Re: water based varnish over oil based stain? - bhh - 06-07-2016 Yes, given sufficient dry time. For insurance, you can add a barrier coat of dewaxed shellac. Dewaxed shellac assures a good bond most every time. If you don't have spray equipment use rattle can shellac; it's dewaxed. If you have spray equipment, use Sealcoat, or mix your own.
