Cutting Sprial Pipe on Chop Saw? - frigator - 07-01-2016

Got a load of spiral pipe coming soon so been thinking about how to cut it. I tell ya, I think I have early onset of dementia cause I cant recall how I cut it before. I do recall using my 10in Dewalt chop saw to cut metal pipe of some variety as I was concerned about the plastic melting.

I am terrible with the knippers so that is not going to be used. Have a sawzill, jigsaw and of course the hacksaw. But I am thinking the chop saw with a cutoff blade. Keep it well clamped? Am I crazy??

Pretty certain a metal cut off saw with an abrasive blade would do the job cleanly. Personally, I wouldn't use the Dewalt (assuming you're talking about a wood cutting compound miter saw). Although I have used mine to cut PVC with a standard wood blade many times. Given your tool selection, I think I'd go with the sawzall with a long, fine tooth metal cutting blade.

4.5" handheld grinder with a cutoff blade.

Use an old belt and a sharpie to mark a concentric line.
Safest, easiest, and least destructive method I've tried.

Safer, cleaner cut if you use a jig so the blade doesn't bounce around, and the pipe sits still, pretty fast too.

Anyhow if you decide to use the chop saw at least get a cheap HSS blade for it, so you aren't eating carbide chunks. Also WEAR GOGGLES

I use metal cutting blades in my jigsaw, I've had the best luck with Lennox .

I just did this .. drilled a hole and cut it with a Jig saw.. super easy.. Wear hearing protection.. the pipe creates a lovely sound. Cats stopped fighting and asked me to keep it down ..

6" Pipe - 60 second per cut ..

I live very near a harbor freight so this is an option. But the width of pipe it can cut is only 4 1/4. I got 7, 6 and 5in pipe. I wonder if I could cut into the pipe, holding the saw with one hand, and rotate the pipe with another to finish the cut. Or maybe forget the whole idea and go with what I have, the jigsaw or sawzall

Instead of all that noise and the mess of those sparks and chips flying everywhere and burs you have to clean up, why not just cut it the easy way?
