The engineer in me is always looking for ways to cut work and costs, but it looks like this isn't a smart move
Lots of things I hadn't considered have been mentioned so it's back to the CAD screen (modern equivilent of "drawing board")

And don't skip the rosin paper between the subfloor and the hardwood floor, either.
