veneer softener - Bope - 11-15-2016

I have some store bought burl veneer. It is not super wavy but enough I would like to flatted it before gluing. I have some Super Soft 2 from Joe Woodworker. Do I need to spray both sides or just one side of the veneer?

I always spray both sides.

Both sides here as well. I wonder if Super Soft 2 isn't just laundry soap, diluted in water?

Last little bit of veneering I did, it wasn't very wrinkled, more like wavy.  Just wet it down (both sides), pressed it between some boards using unprinted newsprint to soak up the water.  Then used it ASAP.

Worked fine and at last check, no problems.  Just making the panels for the lid of a box, so pretty small stuff.

You can also use fabric softener diluted with water.  I think I might have learned that from David Marks.  Can't remember.

you used to be able to do fabric softener, but they seem to have changed the formulation and I'm not sure it works any more.

Looks like they fixed the words beginning in F, turning into fudge thing, somewhere between Allan, and Eric

Carry on.

Allan when I typed laundry soap, I was thinking about fabric softener, or fudge

Is this the fudge thread? I'm hungry

Thank you for the replies. This is a large 52" diameter table top with a star burst pattern. I am not comfortable using a home brew softener for this project. Joe's stuff might just be another home brew but at least it has been tested.

I soak both sides.  Then place nylon screen on both sides with 3 sheets of news paper on top of the screens.  Put in the vacuum press and change the news paper twice a day until dry (about 3 days).

Here is the Formula for flatting from the Center of Furniture Craftsmanship, Maine.  I us it all the time and it never failed me.

2 parts white or yellow glue
3 parts water
1 part glycerin (drug store) in the laxative dept.
1 part denatured alcohol
