2 x framing material, and MDF or Ply top make up most of the workbenches made. And YES they can be made sound and flat.. It was mostly that infernal Schwarz got everyone feeling less than Manly if they didn't have a solid hardwood bench weighing in near 3 tons. If that corner of your garage right next to the garage door is wide enough at the wall to do some work, you can use 2 walls and hang a workbench on that area, which is close to bomb proof. No not Bombe, BOMB.
Build what makes you happy. Chances are you will redo, or rebuild it after using it a while. Either that or be miserable with all you got wrong on the first build.
