Pocket stone - Peter Tremblay - 04-08-2017

Hello everyone,

It's been a while but I'm wondering what you would recommend for a small sharpening stone to carry with me when I travel.

Every now and then I find that I am away from home for awhile and I want to have something small to keep my knife sharp.

I would also have a small strop with diamond paste for final honing.

I was thinking about a waterstone, a ceramic stone, or an accusharp.

What would you recommend?

A small cheap diamond plate. These days airlines will make you throw away stuff that makes no sense at all.

I bought a CBN hone from Woodturners Wonders at the Saratoga show last weekend its about the size of a credit card and works very well.

Search Amazon Peter: Spyderco's has their fine ceramic stones available as pocket stones and they're dirt cheap.

I keep this in the kitchen drawer and it works like a champ.
The site says its 8" x 0.5" x 3.8 but it isn't . It is more like 3"x0.5"x3". And is very handy to maintain an edge.

Second the hone from Woodturner  wonders. Easy to carry and works well.

I've got a little Arkansas stone I keep around as my travel stone. I also made myself a small strop. The annoying thing is that I also need to carry lube for it, but a small bottle of oil does the trick. It would be easier, I think, to have a stone that requires no lubrication at all, or that could use water.

Which one?  They sell a 180/220, 350/600, and a 1000/1200?

I got the two hone set. The 180/220 and the 350/600 combo. The little credit card size hones just come in those grits without special order, as far as I know. If you are just getting one I'd go with the 350/600.
