Yours looks like that magnolia - "tulip poplar" - stuff.  True poplars from cottonwood to those using the common name poplar, are quite a bit different.  Hairy, and unforgiving of dull tools.  I turn bass, which seems similar to the tulip-poplar.  Soft, but makes pretty work. Here tulip popular is very different from magnolias (which is also called Bay Tree). Probably lots of different species and different names in various parts of the country.
