Another project I've been working on for quite a while is this one. Finishing is definitely one of my weak spots in woodworking, and trying to get it right on a 20"x15" cylinder was too much for me. Eventually, after literally months of trying to get the finish right, I gave up, stripped it off, and got a wrap in the color I wanted, and that went on fairly easily. As for the color scheme, most of my drums are a dark charcoal, and black is the easiest equivalent to find in that. Plus, my main snare drum has a natural golden Maple finish, and so that's what the lug spacers and hoop are meant to match. I didn't build this starting from scratch, as I don't have the resources (or ability) to make a drum shell or hoop. Thus, those were both pre-made. The bearing edge was also cut on the shell. The rest I did, though, and probably the part that took the most work was shaping all those lug spacers. I definitely love how it sounds overall! Hope you guys enjoy the pics!

I've been thinking about building a drum set myself. I've been looking at using segments like you use for turnings.

Most of the custom builders use segments so it's looks worth a try.

Check some of the videos. All you need is a miter saw or setup on a table saw. You can hand sand each segment flat and the set up a router to make the drum round.

Looks a lot like a drum. When you hit it does it make the appropriate sounds? I applaud folks who make their own musical instruments, having no musical aptitude myself I wouldn't know if it was correct or not
