Boring large diameter holes - TomFromStLouis - 06-16-2017 My auger bit set only goes up to 1" and I want some 4-6" deep holes approximately 1.5" in diameter. Drilling in cherry fwiw and open to suggestions RE: Boring large diameter holes - MichaelMouse - 06-16-2017 Can you go one side and flip second? If so, Forstners from your local Borg is all you need. Quick search should turn up a half-dozen places if you need long shafts. Lots of work by hand, so hope you can use the DP. RE: Boring large diameter holes - TomFromStLouis - 06-16-2017 These will not be through holes RE: Boring large diameter holes - Adnick - 06-16-2017 Have an old adj auger bit that will go that large, but if I had a lot to do I'd probably use a Forstner bit.... RE: Boring large diameter holes - MichaelMouse - 06-16-2017 Answer is either a shank extender or the specially long bit. RE: Boring large diameter holes - Sawdustd - 06-17-2017 Buy and adjustable auger and stock up on a honkin lot of elbow grease. RE: Boring large diameter holes - TomFromStLouis - 06-17-2017 I only have 3 of these to drill so I hope to have enough elbow grease in house. I take it wood auger buts don't come in anything bigger than 1" so I gotta go with an adjustable? RE: Boring large diameter holes - John Walkowiak - 06-17-2017 There are lots of choices. Google is your friend for finding anything. Here are just 3 results. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003KGBIX4/ref=asc_df_B003KGBIX45034770/?tag=hyprod-20&creative=394997&creativeASIN=B003KGBIX4&linkCode=df0&hvadid=198090983914&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=3514284167872382178&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9019661&hvtargid=pla-320869219101 https://www.timbertools.com/WoodOwl-Nail-Chipper-Auger-Bits-Length-7-1-2.html https://www.amazon.com/Wood-Drill-Bits/b?ie=UTF8&node=256291011 RE: Boring large diameter holes - Bill_Houghton - 06-17-2017 Whatever bit you use, if you're doing it by hand, be prepared to sweat a lot. Maybe even cuss some. RE: Boring large diameter holes - Laid-Back - 06-17-2017 If this is going to be done by hand I'd search out an auger bit as mentioned above. From my experience the adjustable bits and forstners will wonder a to one degree or another not leaving a parallel hole at that depth unless the workpiece is secured in a drill press. Regardless of which route you take let us know how it works out. Regards, Lamar |
