What's the difference? - DaveLeard - 07-13-2017

What's the difference between purchasing an aftermarket high angle frog for a bevel down bench plane versus a bit more clearance angle and a little back bevel on the cutter? This seems such an obvious question, I bet it has been asked and answered before. If anybody can cough up a thread, it would be appreciated.

As a matter of fact, just yesterday the discussion came up. Check Derek Cohen's comments here, https://www.forums.woodnet.net/showthread.php?tid=7331623#post_7493701.

When I bought my LN 4, ordered it with the 55 angle. Turned around after the first push and got the 45. If you want it PM me......

The York pitch is a bit more consistent and compatible with regular sharpening, only reason I can come up with.  Don't expect to take a bite, just a feather in use.  Great for figured wood, useless, IME, for softer woods.

I like Hoadley's terminology, used here for "clearance" angle. http://homepages.sover.net/~nichael/nlc-wood/chapters/caop.html
