Deck board replacement - doobes - 07-22-2017
I replaced two of the boards in my deck last week as they had split through. One went in just fine, the other was tight fitting on one end:

The rest of the gap in this board has opened, up but this end is still tight. I plan on coating the whole deck in Cetol SRD, but was worried that I need to let this board dry (and shrink) more.
What think the braintrust?

I wouldn't think so, it will shrink even if you coat it with something.

Yes it needs to dry. Right now it is likely saturated. There will be no where for the stain to absorb

1 week is much too soon to coat treated wood with anything. I wait at least 6 weeks depending on the kind of wood and the weather. If you installed it last week, I would not coat it until the last week in August, depending on how much rain you get and how dry the board was to start with.

anyone that has ever applied an oil stain on too wet PT knows how dumb that advise for yellawood is. Perhaps it would be prudent to know what kind of stain you're applying
I just completely rebuilt my deck. Finished May 1. It's just about ready. I'll probably wait until October when temps cool

Sort of off topic, but not really, it just struck me that if your deck is elevated, not in ground contact, why PT SYP; why not just untreated SYP for the decking? Many covered porches used doug fir for decking, albeit painted. Up to now, I sort of took it as an article of faith that one uses PT for decking, but lets say that you are staining and sealing plain SYP on all 4 sides prior to installation . . . . . .??
Somebody give me wisdom on this.

Well, this is Woodnet.
In any event it's been too wet to do anything lately and we are in the middle of some sort of subtropical event which is allegedly gonna dump 6" of rain over VA. So it will be at least a couple of weeks before I can do anything.
