Saw rehab,1 for 2 - bandit571 - 12-02-2017 Found a Moving Sale Friday morning, and picked a pair of saws......was aware they were "Gold-plated" $18 for the pair? [attachment=6090] One did look decent enough.....the other was even close...but it will provide parts......a handle and a couple saw nuts Took the handle off, and found.. [attachment=6091] Out why only two bolts matched up....Saw plate was badly pitted, as well. Turn my attention to saw #2 Got the bolts removed, and shined up [attachment=6092] Handle was removed, sanded to remove the flaky, old finish.. [attachment=6093] Set these aside, and worked on getting the plate cleaned up [attachment=6095] Since that was 5 photos, I'll have to do a "Part 2" Stay tuned RE: Saw rehab,1 for 2 - bandit571 - 12-02-2017 Ok, I used a 1/4 sheet sander to clean the saw plate [attachment=6100] Once both sides were cleaned up.. [attachment=6101] I also wiped on a couple coats of Amber shellac onto the handle, and put things back together.. [attachment=6102] I even clocked the screws' slots [attachment=6103] This saw is a Disston D-112.. ..26" long, skew backed, 7ppi, crosscut filed saw. Test cuts? [attachment=6109] Does not need sharpened. Them teeth are VERY sharp Might have been worth missing breakfast? RE: Saw rehab,1 for 2 - JimReed@Tallahassee - 12-02-2017 Good score on the saw with a GREAT cleanup after. That one looks like a good user, indeed. RE: Saw rehab,1 for 2 - Tynyyn - 12-02-2017 Maybe with the crappy saw plate you can make some good hand scrapers. RE: Saw rehab,1 for 2 - Bibliophile 13 - 12-02-2017 Oh, well done!!! That 112 is a fabulous saw. Excellent work on the rehab. RE: Saw rehab,1 for 2 - bandit571 - 12-04-2017 (12-02-2017, 08:57 PM)Bibliophile 13 Wrote: Oh, well done!!! That 112 is a fabulous saw. Excellent work on the rehab. Thank you... . As for that other saw? [attachment=6159] Cut the 2" off the heel, to remove all those extra holes....added a spare handle that seemed to look better.... [attachment=6160] Only to find it was cracked.. I do have a similar handle..hopefully it isn't cracked.... Plate is black from all that "patina" and a rub down with 3in1 oil, to stop any more rust. The wood block? Saw sits in a kerf the saw had made....makes a nice little display stand May at some point try to re-do the nib? Tooth length is 24", and is a 8ppi crosscut. Might make it a Panel saw.... RE: Saw rehab,1 for 2 - bandit571 - 12-09-2017 Three decent saws? [attachment=6207] Maybe? [attachment=6208] Atkins No. 53...59? [attachment=6209] Richardson Brothers No. 8 [attachment=6210] Disston D-112. And.... [attachment=6211] A Disston D-8 (1953?) on top of an old Disston No. 7 Might be a decent start..... RE: Saw rehab,1 for 2 - C. in Indy - 12-10-2017 Nice set o' saws! The Atkins, I would bet, is a No. 51; the screw pattern matches that better than it does the 53/58/59 saws. A real fine saw; my go-to rip saw is a No. 51. Lots of those old ones lost the nickel-plating on the screws over time. Chris [attachment=6228] |
