Frame & Panel Mini Chest, - bandit571 - 07-31-2018 A start up.... Bandsaw is been "on-line" now. It did have a few issues....until I mentioned that the motor could be replaced, again....dang if it didn't start right up.... Right now, I'm taking things easy with it.....running a 1/4" wide blade...less stress on the saw. Have a pile of scraps to mill.. [attachment=11901] mostly 3/4" thick stuff...needs to be resawn to 3/8"... [attachment=11902] Kind of brown, and wavy......tried a jack plane to flatten these....plane was too big, went with one a bit smaller.. [attachment=11903] I also had to cut a few ends square.. [attachment=11904] Works for me. The Stanley No. 3c also did some Jointer work... [attachment=11905] Once I got most of the parts close to the same width. Stay tuned for the next exciting episode... RE: Frame & Panel Mini Chest, - bandit571 - 07-31-2018 There was one longer board..turned it into a "Book Matched" set... [attachment=11906] One was a little misshapened...wider at one end....bandsaw to trim that. Then the plane again, trying to get two edges to match.. [attachment=11907] Will wait and see IF this will be wide enough to make a panel for a lid.....may need one more piece we'll see Set the thin stuff aside, for now....reset the bandsaw.. [attachment=11908] Need to mill 1" wide strips...to build frames to house those thin panels.... [attachment=11909] Some Maple, some Ash. Will need to mark a cut line to follow, so I can keep track of where the blade is going Made a big mess on the floor, today.. [attachment=11910] Guess I had better bring the trashcan back down to the shop... Well, it is a start..we'll see how this turns out. Single Brain Cell Sketch Up is still working on the details.. Stay tuned.. RE: Frame & Panel Mini Chest, - bandit571 - 08-01-2018 Frame parts have been ripped for width....some @ 1-1/2"....some @ 1".. [attachment=11928] Even found a few extras to mill. Found a few extra parts that should be thin enough for panels... [attachment=11929] Need to get some measurements made, and see where to start crosscutting things... Added a filler strip to the blank for the lid..and did a glue up.. [attachment=11930] Was a Royal PITA to do , but somehow made it. Might have had enough clamps? Measurements? Well there IS a Walnut & Cherry version I made a while back... [attachment=11931] This newest version will be a Maple flavoured version..... Stay tuned.. RE: Frame & Panel Mini Chest, - bandit571 - 08-01-2018 Plan has been drawn up...more of a guide-line, than anything set in stone.. [attachment=11936] Managed to mill enough parts for a front frame.. [attachment=11937] and the rear frame.. [attachment=11938] And enough skinny parts for the end frames' corner posts... [attachment=11939] Once I remembered I need to mill tenons on the ends of the rails....the panels didn't look quite as short.. [attachment=11940] So, maybe tomorrow, I can adjust the tenon sizes to match the panel lengths....since I haven't cut the tenons yet .... Stay tuned....the cussing has begun... RE: Frame & Panel Mini Chest, - bandit571 - 08-02-2018 Maybe after Lunch is done, and settled....I can meander done to the shop...for a while? May make use of the Stanley 45 today.....need a bunch of grooves cut. Some of these parts even need two grooves done. Then maybe the tenons can be done, too Depends on how much time I get IN the shop, today.. Stay tuned.. RE: Frame & Panel Mini Chest, - hbmcc - 08-03-2018 Your original (inspiration) looks very nice. This is a good 'cook up', as I have read these travelogues described twenty, or so, years ago. RE: Frame & Panel Mini Chest, - bandit571 - 08-04-2018 Well....Despite the leg and toe cramps...got a little more done... [attachment=11968] The other frame's mortises were done... Ran a plane around.. [attachment=11969] To make raised panels out of both panels..after they had been trimmed to size... Back was then glued up.. .[attachment=11970] Then the front frame was done... [attachment=11971] Both were checked for square, too.. [attachment=11972] maybe later today, I can start on the frames for the ends...and maybe a lid? Stay tuned RE: Frame & Panel Mini Chest, - bandit571 - 08-04-2018 Somehow managed to get the two end frames into the clamps today.... [attachment=11985] Used the Stanley 45 to mill both the grooves.. [attachment=11986] And those tongues [attachment=11987] Used a compass to lay out the feet details [attachment=11988] Used that Stanley No. 3c to raise the panels.. [attachment=11989] Thinking this is actually Cherry? was all out of the thin Maple stock... Will let the two end frame cure over-night...then see how tomorrow goes Stay tuned RE: Frame & Panel Mini Chest, - bandit571 - 08-05-2018 Took the two end frames out of their clamps today...only to have one corner post pop right off....more glue, and a nail through each tenon. Got to checking where the panel of the box's bottom will go....too low on the ends to cut a groove. A Rebate would not be of much help, either....decided to just leave the ends alone, and hang the bottom from the grooves already there....notched to fit around the corner posts... [attachment=12002] Hmm...a forest of clamps has appeared on top of my bench [attachment=12003] Needed one pipe clamp to pull things into square. another because the F style clamp didn't have enough hp to do the job.. [attachment=12004] Either the groove was off-center, or the tongue was....will fix this corner with a glued on sliver of maple. Then tomorrow, I can use a plane to clean all the corner joints up. Maybe I can also start work on a lid? [attachment=12005] Should be enough to do that. May look into adding some brass corner braces.....we'll see. Have one more day to get as much done as I can....stay tuned RE: Frame & Panel Mini Chest, - Arlin Eastman - 08-05-2018 As always I love the project and how you do it. Looking forward to seeing more. |
