LV new shoot board fence - Winterwood - 08-24-2018

This probably won't make AHill completely satisfied (or me, for that matter), but Lee Valley's new shooting board fence is a welcome addition for all shooters.

Unhappily, this reduces even further the chances that LN will ever produce the 52 chute board.

I was looking over this item this morning and am seriously pondering it. My shooting board is one of my most used items in the shop.

The early bird gets the prize...I suppose it also applies to the combination plane. Is L.N. still working on that at all? It was what? Five years ago? that we saw a prototype.

Sure drag me into this one.  I am actually glad they are offering the fence as a separate purchase from the board/fence combo, because I don't own a dedicated shooting plane.  I built my own shooting board, and it's starting to act its age, so maybe making a new one with the fence might not be such a bad idea.  Their board is really only suited to their shooting plane, which is much narrower than a No. 51.

does the shooting board work with a regular plane?

Yes, you just adjust the outer rail for a tight fit.

I would not make my own board as it would cost me more than $30 in labor and material to make the shooting board system that costs $199. Just for the parts, you have to pay - (fence ($110) , track ($50) and base ($10?)). You will probably need two hours or more to make your own shooting board. That means you would break even only if you were only making $15 an hour!

By the way, this is a new grip and if you know how to tap holes, it can be used on non veritas planes, I guess: http://www.leevalley.com/us/wood/page.aspx?p=77042&cat=51&ap=1

I bought a LV miter shooting plane, during the last "scratch and dent" sale, and I have to say it is my go to shooting plane (I also have a LN #9 and a LN jack with a hot dog handle). The handle referenced, really adds something to the plane-I love it!

Lee Valley says their Shooting Board PLane fits the old Stanley 52 Shooting Board

You don't need the track, its nice but my board does not have it.  I'm thinking of the fence.....

Correct, the track is optional for a shooting board, but great when used with a shooting plane (not one of the regular planes).

For apples to apples comparison, I included the cost of the track since the pre-assembled shooting board does come with one (24" long).
