Need some design ideas for a Shoji style lamp - longbarrel50 - 09-06-2018

A good friend is turning 60 and I thought I would make him something special for the big day. I thought a Shoji style table lamp would be nice. I've seen some pictures on the internet, but they didn't really excite me. Any thought of where I should look for inspiration? Any good books or plans? What have you built?
Thanks,
Chris

How about doing some kumiko panels and backing them up with rice paper?

I have a couple of books on the subject.  Amazon sells books on Shoji screens and doors.  They show construction techniques and designs.  They also list sources for the rice paper or imitation paper.

Tip:  The rice paper will shrink after wetting.  So if you glue it to the frame as tight as you can and wait, then lightly mist with water and wipe off the excess, then when it dries it will be tight as a drum.

Also, make not that ripping narrow strips against the fence of a table saw can be risky.  Instead make a narrow strip ripping fixture.

This video shows the jig:

 I like this idea.
While trying to research an Asian room dividers my parents purchased in Japan I came across the company below.
You will find plenty of inspiration of design there for kumiko.
