quick quill depth stop for drill press - MarkSingleton - 11-10-2018 Grizzly lists a "quick quill depth stop" which I have been looking at. Today, not for the first time, I was futzing with my drill press depth stop and NOT having a good time. Stock , 1968 Powermatic drill press with a 1/2-20 threaded rod depth stop that uses to nuts to "sorta" hold the wanted depth. Hard to adjust, because you have to tighten one against the other and , etc. Blech. Anyone here use one? Looks like an elegant solution to my "problem." And, we draw names for Christmas in the extended family. I have been asked multiple times now "what I want for Christmas." This may fill the bill.... http://www.grizzly.com/products/Grizzly-Quick-Quill-Stop/G7316 RE: quick quill depth stop for drill press - EdL - 11-10-2018 IME, those work good as long as the depth rod is round. They don't like a flat on the rod. Ed RE: quick quill depth stop for drill press - Tapper - 11-11-2018 One similar came standard on my Delta 17-965 when I bought it many, many years ago. It's one of the many reasons I bought this one at the time. It works great and you will not regret it! My experience also-have three drill presses, and the ancient Delta (60 years old plus), with the round rod and double nuts, always works. The Delta bench top has a lock on the handle lowering and works reasonably well. The Porter Cable with the flat rod and quick stop will only work reasonably well with the button stopped on the threaded portion and not at all, if on the flat. If you're at all handy, why not get a better quick stop, from MSC or some similar industrial supply, anlong with a section of appropriately size threaded rod and make a sure stop? I have had my old Walker-Turner DP for at least 50yrs and have never gotten around to making a quick-stop for it....Still using those blasted "Jam-nuts" it came with... ![]() ![]() https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xT5SrJO4TgM&t=3s Amazon.... https://www.amazon.com/HHIP-3900-0200-Quill-Stop-Bridgeport/dp/B01IATB0OM/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1541951635&sr=8-1-fkmr0&keywords=drill+press+quill+stop RE: quick quill depth stop for drill press - DaveR1 - 11-11-2018 My Delta DP has one of those "quick stop" sorts of things and I dislike it. My 1932 Walker Turner DP has a smooth shaft and a collar with the thumb screw. I like that much better and plan to convert the Delta to work the same way. RE: quick quill depth stop for drill press - Pirate - 11-12-2018 I never liked how long it took to adjust the 2 nut do stop, and the clamp on one I had from Grizz didn't fit my old Craftsman do. So I made one, using a large nut, with a threaded hole in 1 flat. Adjusts real fast. RE: quick quill depth stop for drill press - MarkSingleton - 11-12-2018 Well. Grizzlys' offering is no longer in the running. Just got in from some measuring attempts. The depth stop is NOT threaded 1/2-20. Not even close. It is much closer to 5/8 in diameter but a 5/8 thread nut is the wrong thread count. Later on I will get out my thread gauges and find out just what is there. Looks like I may have a custom homemade tooling project coming up. Thanks for the replies guys. Darn. Now I have to come up with something else to suggest for a Christmas gift! ![]() RE: quick quill depth stop for drill press - Tapper - 11-12-2018 (11-12-2018, 12:42 PM)MarkSingleton Wrote: Well. Grizzlys' offering is no longer in the running. Bummer! With thread gauges you can definitely nail down the size. Any chance of changing out the threaded rod to match the Griz nut size? If you decide to make your own based on the design above, I would recommend that you find a brass thumb screw threaded shaft (surely some of the suppliers have them - McMaster Carr first comes to mind). Less damage to the threads for when you're "dialing in" the precise depth. Doug RE: quick quill depth stop for drill press - Stwood_ - 11-12-2018 Never had a use for a depth stop. I just run the quill/head all the way down, then bring the table up say 1" if thats the depth I need. Lock the table. |
